What is Medicare Part A
Medicare Part A, commonly referred to as hospital insurance, provides coverage for inpatient hospital care and related services. This coverage includes hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care after a qualifying hospital visit, hospice care, and certain types of home healthcare services. Part A typically covers semi-private rooms, meals, general nursing, medications provided during hospitalization, and other medically necessary inpatient services. Most beneficiaries qualify for premium-free Part A coverage because they’ve paid Medicare taxes through employment, either personally or through a spouse. Those who don’t qualify for premium-free coverage can still enroll by paying a monthly premium. Medicare Part A does require beneficiaries to pay a deductible per benefit period before coverage begins.
Medicare Part A 101
Part A’s home healthcare coverage includes intermittent skilled nursing care or physical therapy, provided certain medical criteria are met. However, Part A does not cover custodial or long-term care services, such as help with daily activities like bathing or dressing. Beneficiaries generally enroll automatically in Part A upon turning 65 if they’re already receiving Social Security benefits.
he benefit period starts when a beneficiary is admitted to a hospital or skilled nursing facility and ends after 60 consecutive days without receiving inpatient care. If hospital stays exceed 60 days within the same benefit period, beneficiaries must pay a daily coinsurance amount. After 90 days, beneficiaries enter a phase where they can use up to 60 additional “lifetime reserve days,” each of which can only be used once in a lifetime. Medicare Part A also covers skilled nursing care following at least a three-day hospital stay, but only for limited durations and under specific conditions. Hospice care under Part A is intended for beneficiaries with a terminal illness who have a life expectancy of six months or less. It covers pain relief, symptom management, counseling, and other supportive services for both patients and their families.
