What is Medicare Part D
Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage to help lower the cost of medications. These plans are offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. Part D is optional but recommended to avoid late penalties if you don’t have other creditable drug coverage. Each plan has its own formulary, which is a list of drugs it covers. Costs can vary based on the plan, the drugs you take, and whether your pharmacy is in-network. Most plans have a monthly premium, an annual deductible, and copayments or coinsurance.
Medicare Part D 101
There is a coverage gap known as the “donut hole,” during which you may pay more out-of-pocket until you reach catastrophic coverage. Many people choose a Part D plan to complement their Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage plan.
Extra Help is available for low-income individuals to reduce Part D costs. It’s important to review Part D plans annually, as formularies and pricing can change.
